Overview

The Project Engineer III provides technical and project management support for electrical power systems across field development projects. This role is responsible for performing engineering design evaluations, managing multiple moderate-complexity projects, and ensuring work is completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements. The Project Engineer III interfaces with cross-functional teams and external electrical service providers to ensure power availability and reliable operation of transmission, substation, and distribution infrastructure. This position may also provide back-up support to the Project Manager as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering design evaluations and support projects from concept through start-up and post start-up modifications.

  • Develop and evaluate options, lead options analysis/selection, and support detailed design and drawings creation.

  • Manage AFEs, procurement activities, and construction/commissioning support.

  • Evaluate existing electrical transmission, substation, and distribution infrastructure to determine required upgrades and new installations to support forecasted loads.

  • Provide ongoing technical support for the engineering process and field operations.

  • Manage multiple projects with moderate complexity, ensuring alignment with scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives.

  • Participate in Invitation to Tender (ITT) development, bid evaluation, and contractor selection.

  • Support identification and sourcing of long-lead equipment and coordinate with FEED contractors.

  • Coordinate development of project management system deliverables (e.g., Gate 3 deliverables) and Functional Interaction Plans.

  • Coordinate project issue resolution, change requests, and endorse change authorizations.

  • Ensure smooth transitions between project stages and consistent application of project management systems across the Project Management Team (PMT).

  • Serve as interface between the Project Team and contractors, ensuring design and construction remain consistent with project specifications and standards.

  • Engage cross-functional teams to understand field development plans and build appropriate electrical load forecasts.

  • Work directly with external electrical service providers (e.g., Oncor, AEP, Xcel) to ensure power availability and alignment with grid requirements.

  • Maintain strong communication with internal stakeholders, ensuring accurate reporting of project status, risks, and issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (Electrical Engineering strongly preferred).
  • 5–10 years of experience as an electrical power systems engineer, designing or supporting medium and/or high-voltage equipment in oil & gas, utilities, mining, or manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including management of third-party engineering firms.
  • Experience in engineering, construction, and project management/controls activities across multiple assignments.
  • Broad knowledge of design standards, specifications, and work processes.
  • Experience creating and/or managing electrical software models (e.g., Milsoft WindMil, ACSELERATOR, PSCAD, ETAP, SKM Power Tools).
  • Must meet conditional job offer requirements including background, drug test, and fit for duty/agility test.
