Overview

A field-based POC Automation Technician is needed to support oil and gas operations in Carlsbad, NM. This hands-on role is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing automation systems and field instrumentation across production sites. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in POC and RTU systems, including experience with Lufkin and Weatherford controllers. This position plays a critical role in ensuring automation reliability, safety, and compliance with industry standards.  

Responsibilities

  • Install, calibrate, program, maintain, and troubleshoot automation and control equipment

  • Provide on-site support for automation systems, RTUs, and field instrumentation (level, pressure, flow, vibration)

  • Maintain and repair POC systems including Lufkin 1.0, Lufkin 2.0, and Weatherford

  • Ensure compliance with process control and automation standards and MOC (Management of Change) procedures

  • Utilize CMMS (SAP) for maintenance tracking and documentation

  • Recommend and implement improvements to instrumentation and control systems

  • Follow industry and company-specific PLC programming standards

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of oil and gas Automation experience required.
  • 2-year degree in Instrumentation or Automation Technology (GPA 2.5+) OR equivalent technical experience with a strong safety record and GED; bachelor's degree in Automation preferred. 

  • Experience working with RTUs, analog/discrete instrumentation, and communication protocols (serial, Ethernet)

  • Basic proficiency in troubleshooting POC systems (Lufkin/Weatherford)

  • Understanding of AC/DC circuits

  • Familiarity with standards such as API, NEC, NFPA, IEEE, ISA

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Windows OS

  • Qualified to work on electrical systems up to 480V (training and PPE provided)

  • Ability to work in confined spaces and from aerial manlifts

  • Willing to work 12-hour shifts, including weekends, holidays, and participate in an on-call rotations.

  • Experience with Rosemount systems

  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, wiring diagrams, Cause & Effects, and control narratives

  • Experience troubleshooting networks including ControlNet, Ethernet I/P, RF communications, fiber optics, and switches

  • Strong knowledge of Function Block, Ladder Logic, and Structured Text programming

  • Must be able to meet all conditional job offer requirements including background, drug, hair follicle, MVR, agility and fit for duty.
  • Physical Requirements - Must be able to lift 40 lbs., climb ladders and stairs. Walking, bending stooping is required. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment. Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
  • Understanding of importance of environmental and safe work practices
