Overview

An Automation Specialist is responsible for overseeing automation, PLC, and SCADA projects on offshore platforms. This role involves installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing field instrumentation, control systems, and electrical equipment. An Automation Specialist ensures compliance with automation standards and provides critical support during outages and maintenance activities. 

 

Must have at least 5 years’ experience offshore and thorough/extensive knowledge of programming Allen Bradley PLC systems and Wonder Ware HMI’s. 

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair field instrumentation, control systems, analyzers, and electrical equipment. 
  • Coordinate and conduct maintenance activities on wells and batteries, ensuring adherence to maintenance schedules and automation standards. 
  • Utilize CMMS (e.g., SAP) for efficient maintenance operations and documentation. 
  • Perform in-depth failure analysis on equipment to address recurring issues effectively. 
  • Respond promptly to automation support needs during outages and ensure zero out-of-compliance work orders. 
  • Conduct evaluation tests on valves, motors, instruments, etc., and provide analytical support on problematic wells. 
  • Proficiently troubleshoot using schematics, ladder logic, electrical one-line, and P&I drawings. 
  • Maintain process control loops, electronic controls, valves, and transmitters. 
  • Utilize advanced computer skills and diagnostic tools for effective troubleshooting and repair. 
  • Collaborate effectively with teams and communicate technical issues clearly. 

Qualifications

Competencies: 

  • Advanced computer skills including MS Office Suite and proprietary software. 
  • Strong initiative, self-starter, and ability to perform under pressure. 
  • Excellent time management, record-keeping, and multitasking abilities. 
  • Proven ability to implement cost-effective solutions and work collaboratively. 
  • Expertise in diagnosing and repairing complex automation systems and using relevant test equipment. 
  • Knowledgeable in environmental and safe work practices, regulatory guidelines, and material specifications. 

Requirements: 

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; Applied Science Degree in Instrumentation & Electrical or Electronics Technology preferred. 
  • Three or more years of Oil & Gas Land Automation/I&E Specialist experience with a strong PLC troubleshooting background. 
  • Experience with Rockwell Automation software (Allen Bradley, FactoryTalk, Studio 5000, Logic 500). 
  • Advanced knowledge of analog and discrete instrumentation, RTU designs, and various communications protocols. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. 
  • Physically capable of lifting 40 lbs, climbing ladders and stairs, and wearing personal protective equipment. 
  • Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record and ability to meet all conditional job offer requirements.
